Part-time Availability and Fixed Lines

As many of you are aware the employer is moving forward with their plans to implement fixed lines for part-time staff.  While for some this may be beneficial, many part-time members have expressed the challenges they will be facing with fixed lines, trying to juggle two or more jobs, family life and other accommodation needs.

The practice has for years, been scheduling part-time staff based on their availability of 22.5 hours per week commitment without a guarantee of shifts as per Article 3.03 in the Collective Agreement. Many part-time staff have chosen to dispute this implementation of fixed lines through a group grievance which will be submitted on Friday September 22nd. If you are interested in more information please call the Union office at ext. 6478 or 6351.

The Local has filed a policy grievance based on the interpretation of the Collective Agreement and this too will continue the dispute process.

In addition, several employees have reported they are scheduled on shifts they are not available and in many cases expected to find coverage for these shifts. As a result, those affected may choose to dispute this matter through the grievance process as well. Should this be the case of what you are experiencing please contact the Union office to discuss further options.

In Solidarity,

OPSEU Local 331 Executive
