NDP stands up for Whitby workers as Liberal health care cuts lead to more layoffs

OSHAWA – NDP MPP Jennifer French is standing up for families in Whitby and Oshawa, as another 21 workers are laid off as a result of the Liberals’ freeze on hospital funding.

“Today, families in Whitby and Oshawa are worried about how they’ll make ends meet as Liberal health care cuts force another 21 workers out of their jobs,” said French. “More job losses are the last thing that Whitby needs, but Kathleen Wynne and the Liberals keep squeezing our hospitals and forcing more layoffs here at home and right across the province.”

Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences has announced that 21 staff will receive layoff notices as the hospital grapples with the fifth straight year of the Liberals’ freeze on hospital funding. As costs increase year after year, frozen budgets actually mean deep cuts for hospitals across the province.

Whitby joins a long list of communities hit hard by Liberal health care cuts. In November alone, 84 layoffs have been announced in Quinte and 158 workers are losing their jobs at the North Bay hospital.

“Rather than investing in health care in our community, the Premier is cutting frontline supports,” said French. “It’s clear that Kathleen Wynne just doesn’t have the same priorities as families in Whitby and Oshawa.”

“We should be strengthening, not cutting supports for mental health across the province. This is a major loss for our community.”
