OPSEU LOCAL 331: REPRESENTING THE INTEREST'S OF OVER 900 MEMBERS |
|
November 16, 2013 To Local 331 Members, This
has been a difficult week for our Membership. The Executive would like to
express our sincere thanks to our members for standing together, respecting and
supporting each other during this stressful time. Layoffs are not easy for
anyone especially those directly affected. Unfortunately it is not the first
time our membership has gone through this process. Just a few of the layoff consequences will be loss of knowledge, disruption, and lower collective morale The decrease in staffing numbers and the increase in workload could impact safety and the quality of patient care. All in all, it might take months – or years – to rebuild the team. These cuts also affect
some of the most vulnerable people in our hospital. Although the phrase
“staffing mix” is being bandied about, our patients will suffer the loss of
individuals they have come to trust and have established therapeutic rapport
with. For a few, their ‘home’ is going to be closed. Although some of the mix changes may improve service
delivery, we are not convinced the proposed mix and number is the right one. We
also believe there are better ways to manage the projected budget deficit. Your Local is doing
everything in its power to challenge these job losses and changes by all avenues
available to us. We value all members of our Local and we will continue to
be your voice. We encourage everyone to
attend the special membership meeting on Wednesday November 20th at
7:00 p.m. In solidarity, Local 331 Executive
